Historic Rail Car lift and haul
|
Until recently, if you drove down to the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum near the Baton Rouge River Center, you would have seen historic rail cars parked on the riverfront. For the past 30 years, these cars had been on display at that location. In early December, Turner Industries Crane and Rigging group closed the River Road and lifted and transported all four cars to the CNN rail yard.
Three of the cars were loaded on flatbed railcars and shipped to a museum in Hammond, La. The fourth car was railed to Monticello, Il., for restoration. The oldest car was built in 1883, the others in 1925. Because of their age, these cars required the special care that Turner Industries Crane and Rigging group provides on every job.
LASM Executive Director Carol Gikas said that watching the loading process was very interesting. During the preparation, she described the camaraderie among the Turner employees which was evident as they talked and joked with each other. “But,” she said, “when the move actually began, there was dead silence and total seriousness.”
Once in Hammond, Turner remobilized and offloaded the cars at the Old Hammond Train Depot. The historic rail cars were then transported through downtown Hammond to their final resting place on C.M. Fagan Drive. This will be the site for the new Children’s Museum. City officials were excited to receive the cars. Mayor Mason Foster personally escorted the cars to their final home. The cars were originally located in Hammond prior to their term at the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum in Baton Rouge.
At the 41st Annual Meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, John Fortner thanked Turner Industries for a very successful job. Everyone on this job worked efficiently and performed their tasks without incident in Baton Rouge and Hammond.
Special thanks to Bobby Teate, John Adams and all the riggers and drivers for making it look easy.
