The local chapter of NAWIC (The National Association of Women in Construction) hosted their annual Block Kids event January 31, 2004 at the Jones Creek Library. Industry members supplied judges for the competition, and representing Turner Industries were Tracy Hollier with Harmony and Blaine Guillory with Nichols Construction. They were joined by Chad Thompson with Associated Builders and Contractors.
“The Block Kids Building Program is a national building program competition that is sponsored on the local level by NAWIC chapters and other organizations. The award winning program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry.”

The program is open to all elementary school children in grades 1 thru 6. The children are asked to create and build a project using a combination of interlocking blocks, a small rock, a ball of string, some poster board and some aluminum foil. Local winners advance to the regional competition, and one semi-finalist from each region is entered in the National Program competition.
At the local competition awards were given to the top three projects. These projects included a crane making a lift, a drawbridge, and a school. The crane project took first place and is pictured below. The three winners, Brittany Aucoin a 5th Grader at Parkview Oaks, Megan Jacaruso a 5th Grader at Parkview Oaks and Taranto Wilson a 3rd Grader at Children’s Charter School, placed first, second and third respectively. The eager participants were asked to explain why they chose their particular project, to demonstrate how it worked, and to describe its practical use and application. The judges were also anxious to hear the answers to the standard, “What do you want to be when you grow up”?
