Welding Quality on Thunder Horse Project

98.4% acceptance for welding is an outstanding accomplishment for any pipe fabrication shop where 4,800 welds were 100% x-rayed, but HARMONY, L.L.C. welders have attained this rate in the field, in tight locations that may have pipe welds positioned in modules over 100 feet high!!! The project is the BP THUNDER HORSE offshore platform where HARMONY, L.L.C. is installing pipe in J. Ray McDermott’s yard in Amelia, Louisiana. To date, over 10,655 Butt Welds and over 6,674 Socket Welds have been completed and inspected. This amounts to over 3.3 miles of completed welds with the total project approximately 95% complete. HARMONY’S inspection team has met the challenge of some of the most demanding inspection criteria in the industry.

Donald Richard and Doug Simoneaux, Managers of HARMONY’S inspection team, credit such a high acceptance rate to good welders, welding rod control, experienced field inspectors, and the cooperation of all of the HARMONY General Foremen.  This inspection team collectively has over 100 years of petrochemical inspection experience.  Most are certified by either the American Welding Society (AWS), American Petroleum Institute (API), or the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and some have multiple certifications.  Our field inspectors, who are working closely with the foremen and craftsmen, are the KEY to ensuring that “HARMONY BUILDS IN THE QUALITY”.  The Thunder Horse project has three (3) modules that will have over 34.75 miles of piping and will weigh over 19,000 tons.  HARMONY, L.L.C. presently is working to test and complete turnover so that the job can ship to Corpus Christi, Texas for integration of the 3 modules with the Hull section.
