Turner Industries and their internal volunteer group, TEAM Turner, partnered with five neighboring companies for local news channel WBRZ’s Stuff the Bus, a school supply drive that benefits schools and their students in the Baton Rouge community. Overall, Turner, with the help of Wink Engineering, Postlethwaite and Netterville, Jones Walker, Wright and Percy, and Teachers Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL), collected 9,726 items worth $9,016. Turner software developer, Liza Fontenot, and IT manager, Rhonda Kiser, captained the event in which approximately 20 TEAM turner members helped collect, sort and deliver the school supplies.
The event culminated on June 20th as employees brought the collected supplies to an empty bus waiting to be filled. The participating companies raised money and collected supplies for two weeks prior to the actual event. Liza said support for the event was overwhelming. “It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and willingness the other businesses in United Plaza had to participate in a TEAM Turner event,” she said. Parishwide, WBRZ filled nine buses for a total of $61,500 worth of school supplies, surpassing last year’s amount by more than $5,000.
Stuff the Bus is an annual event organized by Baton Rouge’s ABC affiliate, WBRZ sponsored by Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS), Office Depot and Raising Cane’s.
