Turner Industries Turnaround Project Awarded for Excellence

The Pelican Chapter of Associated Business and Contractors awarded Turner Industries with the Excellence in Construction Award for the $6.3 million ExxonMobil PCLA Turnaround project. The Excellence in Construction Award, or EIC Award, recognizes the nation’s highest quality construction projects that demonstrate exceptional leadership, innovation and safety, according to the Associated Business and Contractors’ website. Turner won the award in the ‘Mechanical: Industrial’ category for projects less than $10 million.

Turner Industries’ Specialty Welding group began pre-turnaround work in September 2010 at ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge Refinery. The goal was to replace components of a Cat Cracker Unit, some of which dated back to World War II, with minimal downtime to the unit.

Turner completed the turnaround in 48 mechanical working days. The scope of work included demolition and replacement of the bottom cone section of the regenerator, along with a multitude of piping and valve replacement jobs. Turner also performed welding totaling 850 linear feet, detailed rigging of large pipes and valves, boiler making, pipefitting, and replacing all studded convection tubes in the CO Furnace.

This project will now compete for the national award of the same category. The national EIC banquet will be held on Feb. 22, 2012 in Phoenix, Az.

Congratulations to Turner’s Specialty Welding Division on such a distinguished honor. The project demonstrates Turner’s commitment to excellence.
