Turner Industries and TEAM Turner’s support for Susan G. Komen’s ‘Race for the Cure’ is an ongoing effort to help raise money to fund breast cancer research, provide support teams for those living with breast cancer and ensure quality care for people living with breast cancer. Through the ‘Race for the Cure’ event held annually in the Baton Rouge area, Turner provides fundraising and team building efforts to ensure Komen’s efforts and successes continue. This year, Turner raised and donated $6,270.77 (well above its goal of $5,000), was a Crystal sponsor and Exclusive Sponsor of the ‘Survivor Celebration’.
125 Turner employees participated in this event, including four cancer survivors. Trudy Solomon, accounts payable administrative assistant, is a survivor herself, since August 2011. Now, cancer free, Solomon believes giving back to the Komen foundation is the least she can do.
“Komen helped me understand my dilemma and know there was a way out,” Solomon said. “The support I got was tremendous. I was always in good spirits because I knew I didn’t have to die.” Solomon stressed the importance of a having a support group, whether made up of family and friends, or others. “Turner is such a family and they were great through the whole process,” Solomon said. Solomon also raised the most money among Turner employees with a total of nearly $1,200.
“Achieving our fundraising goal is a huge thrill, especially because these funds were donated by Turner employees, their families and friends,” Kristy Bannister, TEAM Turner project leader and vendor relations employee at Turner Industries, said.
These accomplishments would not have been possible without the leadership of Bannister and the dedication from TEAM Turner members. A special thanks to the 125 members that participated in the event, surpassing the goal of 100 participating members.
