TEAM Turner (the Turner Industries employee volunteer group) in Paris, Tx., participated in Lamar County’s 11th annual Relay for Life event on Friday, June 29, raising over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. The event, held at R.L. Maddox Stadium between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am the next morning, consisted of teams from around the county walking a set course throughout the night, symbolizing that cancer never sleeps. This was the largest Relay event ever for Lamar County with 40 teams and more than 400 participants, raising more than $30,000 in total.
More than 20 TEAM Turner members participated in the event. To raise money, members held a hamburger benefit lunch and silent auction on May 30. At the Relay, TEAM Turner set up a booth and sold pizza, drinks and fresh fruit. The food booth’s proceeds also went towards the team’s donation.
“Relay for life is personal for me,” Valerie Vanderburg, event coordinator and Pipe Fabrication supervisor for Turner Industries, said. “I am a four-year breast cancer survivor and I walk for me and all the others who have been affected by cancer in some way. We need to find a cure for this disease,” Vanderburg concluded.
The Turner Industries team included three breast cancer survivors.
