Turner Industries provided jambalaya and career advice for nearly 400 people who attended an Education and Career Fair at the Capital Area Technical College (CATC) in Baton Rouge, La. on August 1st. The Fair was held to provide information to north Baton Rouge residents in the 70805 zip code on education and training for possible careers in their area. The event was just the first step to offering free training for 60 qualified applicants for jobs as pipefitters, welders and electricians in nearby industrial facilities. This training, which will be offered at CATC and Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) is the result of efforts by a group of community partners who have united through a collaboration named the North Baton Rouge Training Initiative.
The Initiative was begun earlier in the year as a way to provide job training opportunities to residents in and around the 70805 zip code. Spearheaded by ExxonMobil, BRCC and CATC, Turner Industries quickly joined in as a way to further workforce development in skilled crafts. The 70805 zip code has been targeted to highlight existing industrial job opportunities as a way to overcome residents’ low education rates and high rates of poverty and crime. Providing skilled craft training can open the doors of opportunity to those who otherwise might not have a chance to qualify for a good job in a high paying industry, and Turner Industries hopes to employ graduates from this program.
