Baton Rouge, La. – Build Your Future (BYF) – Build Louisiana is a unique collaboration of employers, state agencies and industry associations. Their goal is to encourage Louisiana residents to learn about construction craft careers and training opportunities now emerging in our state, and to qualify for and get jobs in these high-demand occupations. Each year, the organization holds a career day at Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Pelican Chapter. This year’s Build Your Future event at the ABC Pelican Chapter marks the 10th year anniversary. Since the event started in 2007, it has grown from a two-day event to a four-day event, with a record-breaking 25 schools and 777 students attending the most recent career day event held the week of October 23rd.
Students are introduced to crafts like welding, pipefitting, carpentry, and equipment operation. They hear first-hand, from people currently in construction craft careers, how to succeed in our industry.
As in year’s past, Turner Industries is a big part of the event, sponsoring one of the days by providing lunch and subject matter experts (SME) for the different craft stations the student tour during the day. Turner Executive Vice President, Stephen Toups, also delivered a powerful speech to the students on the importance of self-worth.
