Turner Industries Awarded OSHA Region VI’s Highest Level VPP Recognition

Eleven Turner Industries sites have been awarded the prestigious “Star of Excellence” recognition from OSHA’s Region VI Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).

Approval into VPP is OSHA’s official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health.

VPP sets performance-based criteria for a managed safety and health system, invites sites to apply, and then assesses applicants against these criteria. OSHA’s verification includes an application review and a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of OSHA safety and health experts.

The VPP program has three levels of recognition: Star, Merit, and Demonstration. Star recognizes employers and employees who demonstrate exemplary achievement in the prevention and control of occupational safety and health hazards the development, implementation and continuous improvement of their safety and health management system and requires recertification every three years.

Within OSHA’s Region VI Star program there are an additional three levels of recognitions: Star, Super Star, and Star of Excellence. This “Star Among Stars” program requires sites to reapply for the award on an annual basis.

Star of Excellence is awarded to sites who perform work more than 90% below industry standard for both TCIR (Total Case Incident Rate) and DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) rates.

“All of our sites that meet the stringent qualifications to be approved as an OSHA VPP Star site are outstanding! However, these eleven sites that have been awarded this additional annual recognition by OSHA’s Region VI demonstrate the true meaning of excellence in health and safety. These are the sites that we point to as examples of how employees work as a team to consistently improve their health and safety programs and processes. They are never satisfied with “being average” but instead push the boundaries to come up with creative and engaging ways to implement the tenets of the VPP, said Senior Corporate Manager, HS&E Karen Powers.

The OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) promotes effective worksite-based safety and health. In the VPP, management, labor, and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system.
