TSS Keeps the Mill Running

gpi dredge and long reach

Turner Specialty Services (TSS) has been a constant presence at a major paper manufacturing facility in Queen City, Texas, for more than a decade — and the work never stops.

A team of 20 to 25 full-time professionals operates on-site around the clock, handling everything from daily material hauling — lime, wood chips, ash, bark, etc. — to large-scale civil projects. The crew recently wrapped up a 70,000-cubic-yard rejects relocation, the kind of job that underscores just how broad the scope has become.

At the core of TSS’s work is maintenance dredging, a continuous operation dating back to 2010. The team runs a heavy-duty Ellicott 14″ x 12″ dredge for primary material movement, alongside GPS-guided remote-control dredges from IMS and VMI for precision work in areas where larger equipment cannot reach.

“Our teams average two to three million gallons per day, maintaining a slurry density of 7% to 10% solids,” said TSS Site Manager Jason Gaspard. “That production level is vital for keeping the aeration settling basins, ash ponds, and fiber inlet ponds clear — any sediment buildup puts mill uptime at risk.”

The results speak beyond the numbers. The Queen City team recently earned Turner’s Corporate Safety Excellence Award for the second consecutive year, proof that high output and a strong safety culture are not a tradeoff — they go together.
