Turner Specialty Services Soars with Drones for Pipe Rack Inspections

Turner Specialty Services’ NDE and inspections group recently completed a groundbreaking project, incorporating the power of drone technology to inspect over 2,000 feet of elevated pipe racks. This innovative approach enhanced safety, efficiency, and data accuracy.

Traditionally, inspecting elevated pipe racks involved time-consuming and potentially hazardous tasks. These tasks can be costly, labor-intensive, and pose safety risks to personnel.

To overcome these obstacles, TSS deployed the Elios 3 drone inspection system. With high-resolution cameras, sensors, and a protective cage, the Elios 3 allowed the team to safely and efficiently inspect multiple tiers of pipes, valves, and electrical components.

The Elios 3 eliminated the need for hazardous work at heights, significantly reducing risks to personnel. With the help of TSS employees, the Elios completed the inspection of 2,000 feet of pipe rack in just two days with 39 flights, a substantial reduction compared to traditional methods. During its count, it was also able to capture 4K videos, 12MP images, and precise LiDAR point clouds, providing detailed insights into the condition of the pipe rack infrastructure.

Structurally, the drone is more efficient compared to traditional methods. It can navigate tight, enclosed spaces with confidence, thanks to its protective cage and the LiDAR sensor, which enabled the team to precisely locate any points of interest and created a 3D model of the structure.
