When Turner Industries’ crane and rigging group was tapped to replace the RCCU Flare Drum at Shell’s Norco facility in September 2024, the project presented a unique set of challenges. Limited access, strict height restrictions, and the requirement to keep the existing derrick intact meant conventional lifting methods simply wouldn’t work.

The solution? Turner engineered an innovative approach using a 500T 4-point gantry system configured to operate at a track height of approximately 25 feet. This eliminated the need for a large crane while providing the precise lift control essential for the job. The team installed custom 50-foot header beams with bolt-on cantilever weights using a 165-ton crane, then bolted them to the flare riser to safely raise and replace the flare drum with pinpoint accuracy.

Safety remained essential throughout the operation. Pneumatic chain hoists that connected to horse collar style lift links handled the load, while jacks securely supported the flare riser—allowing the crew to work safely below without being under a suspended load.

After a year of detailed planning and coordination, field execution took place in September 2025. Over the course of 20 twelve-hour shifts, the project was completed safely, efficiently, and without any incidents.
